working girl

dear working women,

so what is our obsession with meetings? why do they always start out harmless and (somewhat) informational, but quickly turn into a gripe fest and blame game.

we do we try to turn random coworkers into our "family"? don't we have actual family and friends? are our real families lost causes so we create a new ones?

why do i get the feeling that while someone is reminding the group that we are all adults,
they really just want to be the parent of the "adults"?

why does the word "team" always seem to come up? what is so wrong with not wanting to be a part of a team? to want to be an individual that does their work and goes home?

why does emotion always seem to trump logic? if someone cries, then they must be right? why do we think respect is something to demand and not earn?

no wonder women are usually not taken seriously, we can't seem to get through a simple meeting without bringing up how we feel, how we are being treated, and that so and so is not doing their share. that's what kids do.

do you think men do this? do they sit around, taking 2 hours out of their day to talk out feelings and frustrations? h*lls no! i think doing that would be handing over their balls and never getting them back.

Lawrence from Office Space

"h*ll naw man, i think you'd get your a** kicked for saying something like that"

it saddens me. women are intelligent, capable and caring, but we seem to get caught up in the pettiness and turn on each other. we get bogged down with these behaviors and none of our good qualities show through. i think we are better than this.

I work in tech support and we had to move two employees this week because one went into her boss's office crying because she couldn't get along with the other. I don't get why this behavior isn't nipped in the bud. Why doesn't someone say, "You both need to shut up and do your jobs or you're fired?" Of course, I work for state government, so it takes murder to get fired around there, I think.

I completely agree! and I especially love "why does the word "team" always seem to come up? what is so wrong with not wanting to be a part of a team? to want to be an individual that does their work and goes home?" that is exactly how I feel.

I know several women, including myself, that wonder the very same thing about teams and about always having to come up with bigger and better constantly.

Ah, so glad I don't have to deal with the pettiness anymore. It is true, though. Girls have some strange form of competitiveness that turns very mean. It is too bad we can't just do our best and live and let be. sheesh!

I havent had a real job quiet yet (american eagle is not real, and my internship in Jordan was basically me and a girl who would rather be out with her friends and quit very early on in her "career") but I understand what you mean, I hate when I get put into group assignments. I just wanna do things the way I see fit, and deal with MY consquences, and not have some chick who was PMSing and couldnt get her shit done bring me down. Im plan on working in the Graphic Design field, so I see some of these issues coming up in the future

Oh geez, I know what you mean. Talk about emotional and turning stuff into a crying game. In my job it was whoever was the absolute bitchiest won. And the same person always won cuz she was the worst. I was usually the one in tears, but NEVER at work, at home.
And I never wanted to be on the "team" cuz I wanted to do my work and GO HOME!

I actually work with more men, and they whine more than the ladies do! But I've never been a fan of team stuff--just give me my part, you do yours and get on!

Meh, I'm fine with team stuff as long as my team doesn't suck.

Amen sister. I started to really dislike working with and for women due to the cattiness. More working against each other than with each other.

As a SAHM this just makes me long for some work social time, petty or no!

I often admit to myself that, "tomorrow I am not going to go there again". I remind myself if I focus more, I will just concentrate on my own stuff. It sometimes is such a "drain" dealing with work stuff. All in all, does anything really ever change?
