working towards a bakers 2 dozen

dear valentine,

i know, this is old news! but last week i had an important message to share (twilight underwear), so this had to wait a few days! but as you probably heard, michelle and jim bob duggar are preggo with their 19th child (while their youngest is only 8 months old). i read all kinds of comments on it, from the truly nasty to the truly naive. i don't want to be nasty, but i do have a problem with some of the things they've said.

i am all about women who know what they want in life and then work hard to attain it. thats the definition of feminism, whether her goal is to be CEO of a major corporation or a mom of 20. and i'm certainly not in favor of policing a woman's uterus, no matter how crazy her personal choice may seem to me. (a replacement pair, people. thats all thats necessary is a replacement pair).

i could respect michelle duggar for her choice if it was in fact that; a CHOICE. but it wasn't. they used the lamest cop out known to man and "let God decide". come on people! god gave us high functioning brains and free agency for a reason! so that we could make our own decisions!! why bother getting out of bed? or choosing what job to take? or any other number of important life decisions… you may as well just let god decide. but thats not how it works. he gave us the ability to reason, to think, to problem-solve, and to make responsible decisions. i think he wants us to us that ability, don't you?

they quit using the birth control pill because it had inadvertently caused a miscarriage (they accidently conceived while on the pill). soooo..… whats wrong with condoms? pills are not the only birth control option, and i can guarantee a condom has never caused a miscarriage.

many internet commenters have this to say "if they can take care of their kids, why do you care how many they have?". good point. but i would argue that the duggars themselves have provided the empirical evidence showing that the mom and dad CAN'T in fact take care of 18+ children. here is how they do it:

each older child is assigned a younger child (or two) to be their buddy. the older child is responsible for helping them get dressed, brush teeth, get fed, clean, etc. so basically they've stolen the childhood innocence away from their older children and burdened them with the adult responsibilities of raising their younger siblings, because its too much for just two adults to handle. there's some great parenting. sacrifice your older children's childhood because you couldn't bring yourself to decide to use a durex (no they're not paying me for the free promo, they just have funny ads. i actually prefer the lifestyles brand condoms myself).

i know this will probably be controversial, but i wouldn't be me if i didn't cause controversy everywhere i go! hopefuly this pic will lighten the mood!

Amazing to have 18 other siblings. I hate to think what the family get togethers will be like once they are all grown and have families of their own.dre

You hit the problem I have with it, right on the head.

The older kids are the parents to the younger kids, and I don't think that's fair.

I've said this in other comments, but I sort of hope one of the kids becomes a crackhead. Just to shake things up a bit.

That last part was dead on. I know a family who has 12 kids and they have raised them the same, each older child "helping" with the younger. I have often thought myself that they have taken the chance for these kids to be kids because they are too busy being parents to their siblings. My question for the D family is, "was this God's plan, to have your kids raise your kids?" Probably not.

ugh...they are crazy, plain and simple. besides the fact that the older kids raise the younger kids, how do they spend any individual, meaningful time with each child. simply, they don't because they have too many kids. i know this because i have five and sometimes that is too many!

Yeah fuck that, I plan on having 2 kids, than my husband aint gettin any til he gets a vasectomy...

For real though, I totally believe that theres a time for everything in every persons life. I hate when my moms friends talk about how theyre daughters have to do everything in the house now that they're older, I mean yeah helping out with chores is one thing, but taking care of the household is another, that can be done when the daughters have their own homes to take care of... so sad. Maybe God should rid them of they're sex drives...

I just can't imagine having a family that big. And you know they hardly get to spend any time with their kids, individually. And if I was one of their kids I'd be grossed out thinking that my parents were like rabbits. And also: don't they fall out by now??

It's crazy to me - I can barely manage two without going bonkers every day!!

granted they own several commercial properties that they lease out for money, they are also exposing their entire family to the world with TV cameras in that house everyday...for money.

I wrote a post MONTHS ago about how I was intrigued AND disturbed by this family. You know their oldest son, Josh, is expecting too?? They will also have as many children as "God sees fit". They are having their first at 21-22 years old...should be ALOT more coming.
Sean says that Michelle's "ya-ya" probably looks like the sleeve of a wizard by now.
It's just disturbing to me now, not intriguing anymore.

That McD's pic is gross!

I come from a bit of different angle on this. While I have no desire to have 19 kids myself (well, sorta...), I respect their decision (and yes, they've still decided). Though there are many points I disagree with their philosophy, I think it's great that they're fostering a strong sense of family and service.

Having only been through it once, I can't begin to fathom going through it 19 times. Craziness.

supahmommy- somethin's wrong with that girl said...

oh thank god someone else said it.. i was still mullling it all over in my little tiny brain.. 19.

I agree. they are NOT parenting... they are delegating parenting responsibilities...

have as many as you want: but step up parent them...

i also find it odd that they are on tv.. seems to go against their lifestyle/ beliefs.

Now if Edward wanted to have 19 vamp-umans WITH ME... im all for it.

I'm kinda on the fence about this.
The strongest instinct is for me to look at them and shake my head in disbelief. I really can't quite imagine the thought process it takes to pop out as many kids as humanly possible.
But on the other hand...I think about the responsibility that those kids are learning by being a part of a family like that, I feel a bit of a failure since my own daughter can't even pick up her dirty underwear out of the floor without being told. (that was possibly TMI, sorry)

After seeing the last picture, I've forgotten what this entry is about.

Oh, 19 babies? She can have as many as she wants. I, for one, think she's a little nutty, but whatever works.
